Biography
Dr. Andre Oboler is the Director of the Community Internet Engagement Project at the Zionist Federation of Australia. He is a social media expert and holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Lancaster University, UK and in 2007-2008 was a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Political Science at Bar-Ilan University, Israel. Dr Oboler is co-chair of the working group on Online Antisemitism for the Global Forum to Combat Antisemitism and an expert on the Inter-parliamentary Coalition for Combating Antisemitism’s Internet Antisemitism Working group. He is also Chair of the IEEE Victorian Section’s Computer Society. He is a former Legacy Heritage Fellow at NGO Monitor in Jerusalem, a member of the ROI Community and editor of ZionismOnTheWeb.org – a website countering on-line hate. News – 6 January 2011 This week’s Australian Jewish News carries an article “Deconstructing a web of hate” on Dr Oboler’s CIE Project. The articles discusses the launch of CIE’s new website (scheduled for January 24th, 2011) and the projects need for funding to help us meet an ambitious goal of providing true monitoring of online antisemitism. Detailed biography Dr Andre Oboler is the Director of Online Engagement at the Zionist Federation of Australia, where he heads the Community Internet Engagement Project. He also works with the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission on their “Click Against Hate” program for schools. Andre Oboler has lived in South Africa, Australia, the United Kingdom and Israel. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from Lancaster University (UK) and a first class honours degree in computer science from Monash University (Australia) and has completed a Post Doctoral Fellowship in the Political Science Department at Bar-Ilan University (Israel) focusing in online public diplomacy. In Australia Andre served as a Madrich with Hineni Youth and Welfare. In the UK he served as President of the Lancaster University Jewish Society, Secretary of the Union of Jewish Students and as a Deputy on the Board of Deputies of British Jews. As CEO of Zionism On The Web, Andre’s work on behalf of Israel and the Jewish community has received endorsements and support across the Jewish world. Dr Andre Oboler holds a PhD from Lancaster University and Bachelors and first class Honours degrees from Monash University. In 2007-2008 he completed a Post Doctoral Fellowship in Political Science at Bar-Ilan Univrsity in Israel. He has worked in the Higher Education sector since 2001 in both Australia and the UK. In addition to his experience he completed teacher training (stage 1 certificate) with the Centre for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching at Lancaster University. Dr Oboler has published a number of academic articles in the fields of computer science, software engineering, empirical research, knowledge management, and the internet. He is a member of the IEEE and currently serves as the Chair of the Computer Society Chapter of the Victorian section of the IEEE. He also has experience with management and governance through a number of non-technology related activities.
